Confined Space — Vehicle SWMS

Confined space hazards in auto body workshops arise when workers enter vehicle cabins during interior repairs, work inside enclosed cargo compartments of trucks and vans, access fuel tanks for cleaning and repair, or enter large marine and industrial vehicle hulls for coating work. These spaces restrict air movement and can rapidly accumulate solvent vapours, paint fumes, welding gases, or depleted oxygen atmospheres. The WHS Regulation 2025 requires a permit-to-work system for all confined space entry, atmospheric monitoring before and during work, and documented rescue planning. Controls (Hierarchy of Controls)

Classify confined spaces and establish permit-to-work system for all entries
Conduct atmospheric monitoring for oxygen, flammable gas, and toxic vapours before entry and continuously during work
Provide forced mechanical ventilation to maintain safe atmosphere throughout the work period
Station trained standby person at entry point with communication to entrant at all times
Develop written rescue plan specific to each confined space entry with rescue equipment readily available
Isolate all energy sources including fuel systems, electrical, and ignition sources before entry
Limit entry duration and establish re-entry requirements after breaks
