Two-Pack Paint Application SWMS

Two-pack polyurethane paint systems are the industry standard for automotive clear coats and solid colour topcoats, but the isocyanate hardener component is one of the most potent respiratory sensitisers encountered in any Australian workplace. A single unprotected exposure event can trigger permanent occupational asthma. The WEL for isocyanates (as NCO) drops from 0.02 to 0.005 mg/m3 on 1 December 2026 — a 75 per cent reduction. Controls (Hierarchy of Controls)

Conduct all two-pack application inside a compliant spray booth meeting AS/NZS 4114 airflow requirements
Require supplied-air respiratory protection (AS/NZS 1716 Type 2) for all workers during two-pack application
Provide chemical-resistant gloves (nitrile minimum) and full-body coveralls to prevent skin contact
Mix two-pack paint in a dedicated ventilated mixing room with spill containment
Maintain health surveillance program with baseline and annual spirometry for all exposed workers
Prohibit eating, drinking, and smoking in any area where isocyanate products are used or stored
Conduct quarterly air monitoring to verify exposure levels remain below the incoming 0.005 mg/m3 WEL
