Belt conveyor operation, inspection and minor maintenance at mining operations, including idler alignment checks, spillage management, tail-pulley guarding verification, belt-fire system inspection and LOTO before structure access. Triggers WHS Act 2011 s.19 PCBU duties and WHS (Mines and Petroleum Sites) Regulation NSW 2022 principal hazard requirements.

Hazards identified

3 hazards covered, sorted by priority.

Tail-pulley nip-point entanglement during inspection or cleaningHIGH

Crush amputation or fatal drawn-in injury

Belt fire from friction, bearing failure or material build-upHIGH

Underground fire fatality and asphyxiation

Stored energy release on un-isolated conveyorHIGH

Unexpected start-up causing serious crush injury

Control measures

Hierarchy-of-controls order: elimination β†’ substitution β†’ isolation β†’ engineering β†’ administrative β†’ PPE.

  1. 1Apply full LOTO with personal danger tags and verify zero energy before accessing structure or pulleys.
  2. 2Maintain fixed guarding to AS 4024.3610 at all nip-points; never bypass or remove while running.
  3. 3Inspect belt-fire detection, deluge and CO monitoring each shift; clean spillage to prevent friction ignition.
