Mixer Operation SWMS

Industrial food mixers including dough mixers, ribbon blenders, and planetary mixers present serious entrapment hazards from rotating beaters, paddles, and agitators. Workers have been killed and severely injured by reaching into mixer bowls during operation or during cleaning when the machine was not properly isolated. Flour dust generation during mixer charging creates respiratory exposure that must be controlled under the incoming WEL of 0.5 mg/m³. This template addresses machine guarding, lockout tagout procedures, and dust control requirements under the WHS Regulation 2025 and the binding Managing Risks of Plant Code of Practice effective 1 July 2026.

Controls (Hierarchy of Controls)

Install interlocked guards on all mixer bowls that prevent operation when the guard is open
Implement lockout tagout procedures for all mixer cleaning, maintenance, and bowl changes
Provide local exhaust ventilation at the mixer charging point to capture flour dust during ingredient addition
Use mechanical lifting aids for heavy mixer bowls and ingredient containers above 15 kg
Restrict mixer operation to trained and authorised personnel only
Install emergency stop controls within reach of the operator and any other worker near the mixer
Conduct annual machine guarding inspection and functional testing of interlocks
Train all operators in entrapment hazards with practical demonstration of lockout tagout procedures
