Clean Energy SWMS

The clean energy transition has opened a cluster of trades where SWMS coverage was thin until 2026. Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) installation now sits under the mandatory AS/NZS 5139:2019 Amendment 1 (mandatory since 19 December 2025), with utility / grid-scale BESS construction adding HV substation interconnection, multi-MW container fire suppression, and the thermal-runaway response framework set out in the AFAC BESS Emergency Response Guidelines and FRV GL-55:2025. Electric vehicle workshops have transitioned to high-voltage drivetrains under AS 5732 — service-disconnect verification, contactor-open testing, and insulation resistance measurement on HV traction batteries above 60 V DC. Commercial rooftop solar carries the dual HRCW trigger of fall from height > 2 m and energised electrical work on DC strings; AS/NZS 5033 governs the installation framework and AS/NZS 4509 the off-grid stand-alone systems where applicable. End-of-life PV recycling closes the loop on the first wave of Australian residential and commercial solar (2010-era panels now reaching end-of-life), and wind turbine nacelle confined-space entry pairs the at-height risk of tower ascent with the confined-space duty under AS 2865 for gearbox, yaw, and pitch system maintenance.
