Wind & Renewables SWMS
Australia's renewable energy construction boom is creating demand for SWMS that address hazards unique to wind, solar, and battery energy storage systems. Wind turbine erection combines high-altitude work (nacelle heights of 100 m+ on Class 5 towers), crane lifts exceeding 1,000 t capacity, confined space entry into nacelles and towers, and energised HV electrical commissioning. Utility-scale solar introduces arc-flash risk from DC strings at up to 1,500 V — well above the model WHS Reg HRCW Reg 291 Cat. 11 threshold. BESS installations are governed by AS/NZS 5139:2019 (battery safety) and the new NSW COP for BESS (2024). This category covers wind turbine construction, nacelle and blade installation, solar farm string installation and DC commissioning, BESS installation and commissioning, EV charging infrastructure installation, and small hydropower and pumped hydro. Each SWMS references AS/NZS 5139, AS/NZS 3000, the relevant state network operator's requirements, and the HRCW categories under Reg 291.
