Thicknesser & Jointer SWMS

Thicknessers and jointers (surface planers) use high-speed rotating cutter blocks that can grab and eject timber at extreme velocity, causing severe blunt trauma injuries to operators and bystanders. The exposed cutter block on a jointer is one of the most dangerous guarding challenges in any woodworking workshop because the guard must allow timber feed while preventing hand contact. Thicknessers generate substantial wood dust volumes and noise levels that routinely exceed 90 dB(A). Controls (Hierarchy of Controls)

Fit bridge guard on jointer that automatically adjusts to workpiece width
Install anti-kickback fingers on thicknesser infeed side
Connect dust extraction to both machines with minimum capture velocity at cutter block
Prohibit hand feeding within 300 mm of jointer cutter block — use push blocks
Verify cutter block and knife condition before each shift with lockout isolation
Provide Class 5 hearing protection for all operators and workers within 3 metres
Ensure emergency stop is accessible from operator position on both machines
