Spray Finishing — Timber SWMS

Spray finishing in the timber industry involves application of polyurethane lacquers, nitrocellulose lacquers, solvent-based stains, water-based coatings, and two-pack catalysed finishes — each with distinct chemical hazards and fire risks. Two-pack polyurethane finishes contain isocyanate hardeners identical to those in automotive two-pack paint, requiring the same supplied-air RPE and health surveillance programs. Nitrocellulose lacquers are extremely flammable and generate explosive vapour concentrations during application. Controls (Hierarchy of Controls)

Conduct all spray finishing inside a compliant spray booth meeting AS/NZS 4114 requirements
Provide supplied-air RPE for all two-pack polyurethane finish application
Provide organic vapour respirator with P2 pre-filter for solvent-based finishes
Ensure booth electrical fittings are explosion-proof rated for flammable solvent use
Maintain health surveillance with spirometry for all workers applying isocyanate-containing finishes
Store nitrocellulose and flammable finishing products in compliant hazardous goods store
Install automatic fire suppression in spray booth and finishing area
