Power Generation SWMS

Thermal and combined-cycle power generation maintenance carries some of the highest-consequence hazards in Australian industry — confined-space entry into combustion chambers and pressure vessels, hot work alongside residual hydrocarbon and PFAS-bearing components, and the time-pressured outage cycle that compresses planning into days. Gas turbine inspection requires fuel-gas isolation and purge, controlled cooldown to entry temperature, combustor and casing confined-space entry under AS 2865, borescope and visual NDT, and a defined recommissioning lockout sequence. Boiler tube replacement during an outage pairs pressurised-system isolation under AS/NZS 3788 with hot work inside a confined space — oxy or plasma cutting of the failed section, fitup and welding of the replacement, post-weld NDT, and hydrostatic test before recommissioning. Waste-to-energy plants extend the same hazard set to bunker and feed-system work, grate maintenance, flue-gas treatment reagent handling, and ash management. Water treatment plant maintenance covers clarifier and digester confined-space entry, chlorine and sodium hypochlorite dosing system service, and the biological exposure controls required under SWA Biological Hazards CoP 2026.
