What This SWMS Covers

This SWMS covers bricklaying and block laying work including residential and commercial masonry construction, scaffold-based bricklaying at height, brick cutting and grinding, and mortar mixing. Bricklaying becomes HRCW when performed from scaffolding above 2 metres.

Who Needs This SWMS

Bricklayers, bricklaying apprentices, blocklayers, principal contractors engaging bricklaying subcontractors

Key Hazards & Control Measures

Falls from height (scaffold, elevated work)FatalScaffold erected by competent person, guardrails, toe boards, safe access (stairs/ladder), fall arrest for leading-edge workEngineering / PPE
Scaffold collapse / overloadingFatalLoad ratings displayed, brick packs distributed evenly, scaffold inspection register, competent person erectionEngineering / Administrative
Manual handling (bricks, blocks, mortar)SeriousMechanical aids (forklift to scaffold, hoist), brick packs at waist height, limit carry distances, team lifts for heavy blocksEngineering / Administrative
Silica dust (cutting bricks/blocks)CriticalWet cutting with brick saw, dust extraction, P2 RPE, never dry-cut without controlsEngineering / PPE
Cement burns (mortar contact)ModerateWaterproof gloves, long sleeves, wash hands regularly, pH-neutral wash availablePPE / Administrative
Falling objectsSeriousToe boards on scaffold, exclusion zones below, materials secured on platforms, hard hats in drop zonesEngineering / Administrative
Noise (brick saw)ModerateHearing protection during cutting, noise assessment for sustained usePPE

Frequently Asked Questions

Q:Is a SWMS required for bricklaying?
A SWMS is legally required when bricklaying involves HRCW, most commonly work at heights above 2 metres from scaffolding. Ground-level bricklaying does not require a SWMS but a JSA is recommended.
Q:What are the silica risks in bricklaying?
Cutting bricks and blocks with a brick saw generates respirable crystalline silica dust. Wet cutting is mandatory and P2 RPE should be worn. Never dry-cut bricks without dust controls.
Q:How much weight can a bricklayer safely lift?
There is no single weight limit — risk depends on frequency, posture, distance, and duration. As a guide, mechanical aids should be used for loads above 20kg and brick packs should be placed at waist height on the scaffold.
